What is Black Sky?
A prolonged outage of power and dependent services. Not a new government crisis declaration and not a claim that an attack is underway. Planning language for when lights, pumps and networks fail together.
Cornerstone resilience briefing
Black Sky is planner language for a prolonged, wide loss of power and every service that rides on it. UK preparedness talk centres on about 72 hours. AffixIO does not restore electricity. The affixio SDK 2.0.3+ keeps local signed yes/no proofs alive when the network path fails, then syncs when connectivity returns.

A prolonged outage of power and dependent services. Not a new government crisis declaration and not a claim that an attack is underway. Planning language for when lights, pumps and networks fail together.
Preparedness campaigns and resilience discussions treat roughly 72 hours as the window households and many organisations should be able to manage while restoration and emergency messaging catch up.
Banking and ATMs, mobile and internet, water and sewage pumps, fuel sites, rail and traffic systems, hospitals and other critical services that need power or live connectivity.
On the host that already holds the records. Local prove continues offline. Queue flushes to AffixIO for verify, ML-DSA-65 attestation and Merkle audit when the path returns. Use SDK 2.0.3 or later.
The point of three-day readiness is continuity while restoration, emergency messaging and mutual aid catch up. Software that only works with a live cloud API collapses earlier than the grid itself.
Lights, heating and most digital services drop. Traffic signals fail. Mobile backhaul thins. Card terminals and many ATMs stop. Cloud-only auth and eligibility gates refuse work even on sites that still have generator power.
AffixIO: local prove still works on generator-backed hosts; remote-only gates freeze.
Water pressure and sewage movement degrade where pumps need electricity. Fuel sites struggle without power or payment rails. Logistics queues form. Operators discover which “online” controls were never designed for partition.
AffixIO: offline queue holds pending sync while the wide-area path is dark.
Households and critical sites manage with stored water, food, cash, radio and local procedures. Systems that can still compute need local decisions that remain checkable when the wide-area path returns.
AffixIO: flush verify, ML-DSA-65 attestation and Merkle audit when connectivity returns.
Six critical cascades. AffixIO assists only where a local signed eligibility or permission check still matters on a powered host.
Card authorisations, ATM cash cycles and many settlement paths need power and live networks. Cash demand rises quickly when electronic rails stall.
AffixIO: local permission and eligibility proofs for workflows that still run on a generator-backed host; offline queue until settlement or attest paths return.
Base stations, exchanges and cloud control planes drop when power or backhaul fails. Apps that only trust a remote API freeze even if the device still has battery.
AffixIO: prove in offline or auto mode on the host; do not treat AffixIO as a substitute for emergency radio or satellite comms.
Electric pumps keep supply pressure and move waste. Extended loss risks dry taps and sewage backup, especially away from gravity-fed reservoirs.
AffixIO: no role in pumping. Only relevant if an operator’s access or maintenance gate still needs a local signed yes/no on surviving plant systems.
Forecourt pumps, payment terminals and depot logistics depend on electricity and connectivity. Fuel becomes a bottleneck for generators and emergency fleets.
AffixIO: can gate authorised fuel or fleet actions where the host remains powered; cannot keep pumps running without electricity.
Signalling, traffic lights, depot systems and last-mile routing degrade or halt. Goods that rely on just-in-time digital dispatch stall.
AffixIO: offline checks for vehicle, driver or shipment eligibility on sites that still have local compute; sync audit digests after reconnect.
Clinical systems, access control and supply chains lean on power and networks. Generators buy time; cloud-only gates do not.
AffixIO: edge prove for consent, clearance or access policies held on the hospital host; records stay local; AffixIO sync waits for the path back.
Lancaster already showed the cascade.
In December 2015, flooding cut electricity to tens of thousands of people in Lancaster. Heat failed. Some water supplies failed with the pumps. The railway station closed. Petrol stations and shops stopped. Most cash machines did not work. Copper landlines and FM radio were among the communications that still carried information. That local blackout is the civil-contingency warning behind today’s Black Sky language.
Infrastructure failure is the first blow. The second is application design that assumes continuous reachability to a remote verifier. Eligibility, access and agent permission checks that only exist as remote API calls become unavailable the moment the path is partitioned — even on a site that still has generator power and local records.
AffixIO’s answer is local prove on the host that already holds the dossier, with a durable offline queue and a flush path for attestation and Merkle audit when the network returns.
Same policy question. Different behaviour when api.affix-io.com — or any upstream — is unreachable.
The counter freezes unless a distant API answers. Outage becomes an application outage on top of the infrastructure outage.
The host that holds the records still proves. Outcomes are signed locally, queued, then verified and attested when connectivity returns.
prove() stays on-host in offline or auto mode.affix/offline-queue.jsonBoth affixio@2.0.2 and affixio@2.0.3 exist on npm. Prefer 2.0.3 or later. 2.0.3 fixes circuit binding of /verify attestations (AFFIXIO-2026-001). Current published line may be 2.0.4; offline prove and queue behaviour below applies from 2.0.3.
mode: "offline"
Prove on the host every time. Enqueue work for later AffixIO sync. Use when you expect prolonged partition or air-gapped operation.
mode: "auto"
Use AffixIO when reachable. Fall back to local prove when the network or API path fails. Default posture for Black Sky-aware apps.
mode: "online"
Expects reachability for licence and sync. Zero-knowledge prove still runs on the host. Not the Black Sky default.
// Prefer 2.0.3+ (2.0.2 exists; avoid for unbound /verify attestations)
npm i affixio@2.0.3
import { AffixSDK } from "affixio";
const sdk = new AffixSDK({
apiKey: process.env.AFFIX_API_KEY,
licenceOnly: false,
queueUnsyncedProofs: true,
autoFlush: true,
});
const proof = await sdk.prove({
mode: "auto",
circuitId: "simple_yesno",
fields: { claim: "active", required: "active" },
});
// While partitioned: local signed outcome + pending_sync
// When the path returns: verify, attest, Merkle audit
await sdk.flushOfflineQueue();
sdk.dispose();

Same offline spine. Different counters. These are patterns, not claims of sector certification.
Permission and eligibility checks that must not freeze solely because a remote verifier is partitioned.
Banking patterns →Vehicle, driver and dispatch gates on depot hosts that may still have local power when the wide area does not.
Motoring patterns →Local prove with records held on the controller host; AffixIO attests hashed decisions when the path returns.
Edge Audit →Scoped action checks before spend or tool use. Offline-aware evidence still needs a powered runtime.
For agents →When the backhaul is gone, the honest states are local yes, local no, or blocked. AffixIO keeps the first two checkable and queues the sync. It does not invent a live remote attestation while the path is dark.

ArticleAn informal civil-contingency name for a prolonged, wide power outage that also takes down services that depend on electricity. Official UK risk language usually discusses a national power outage scenario instead.
Household preparedness guidance and resilience discussions commonly use about 72 hours as the minimum window people and some organisations should be able to manage while restoration and emergency messaging take effect.

No. It is informal planner language. Official materials speak about national power outage scenarios, restoration standards and household Be Ready advice.
On hosts that still have power: local signed eligibility and permission proofs continue offline, then flush for AffixIO verify, attestation and Merkle audit when connectivity returns. AffixIO does not restore electricity, water or fuel.
Both 2.0.2 and 2.0.3 exist. Prefer 2.0.3 or later because 2.0.3 binds /verify attestations to a circuit. The current published npm line may be 2.0.4.
No. If the host has no power, local prove stops. AffixIO only covers verification continuity on surviving compute.
