The UV index is the international scale for the strength of the sun's ultraviolet radiation at the Earth's surface. The World Health Organisation sorts it into bands: 0 to 2 is low, 3 to 5 is moderate, 6 to 7 is high, 8 to 10 is very high, and 11 or above is extreme.
A YES verdict means the peak UV today sits below 8, so a normal day outside is fine with the usual care. A NO verdict means the peak is 8 or above, so the advice is to stay in the shade around midday and cover up.
